Teacher and technician notes (2.10.1d[1])

This is a good experiment to introduce some simple Quickfit and the technique of distillation. Apparatus needs to be carefully checked to avoid glass bends hanging on by the grease (we use plastic clips) and some very imaginative, but not very effective, clamping.

It is useful to point out how the separation depends on the boiling points of the various materials and that vigorous boiling will cause the higher boiling point components to splash over. Boiling point of propanal = 76 ºC, sulfuric acid = 338 ºC.

Materials:

1M sulfuric acid (10 cm3) Sodium dichromate(VI) (3 g)
Anti-bumping granules Propan-1-ol (1.5 cm3)
Benedict's solution (5 cm3) 1M sodium carbonate (5 cm3)
50 cm3 pear-shaped flask 10 cm3 measuring cylinder
Tripod and gauze Bunsen burner
Funnel Expansion adapter
Heat-proof mat Stopper
Powder funnel Still head
Glass bend Joint clip
Test tubes (2) Test tube rack
Laboratory jack or alternative Dropping pipette
Top pan balance reading to the nearest ± 0.1 g Disposable gloves
